Confronting Hate & Lies: D. James Kennedy Ministries Files Suit Against the Southern Poverty Law Center.
“Those who stand on principle often stand alone.”
So goes a well-worn saying from our nation’s capital—one that may say more about our nation’s capital than many of its denizens realize. Curiously, it stands on its head a saying attributed to one of our nation’s preeminent founders, John Adams, who said: “Always stand on principle, even if you stand alone.”
Notice the subtle twist?
Another more Biblical approach might be to say: “There comes a time when you must stand for truth, even if no one will stand with you.”
Here at DJK Ministries, we have come to just such a time. We recently filed suit against the Southern Poverty Law Center (and two other defendants who relied upon the SPLC) for defamation—what the attorneys call libel per se—and for discrimination.
The suit cites religious discrimination based upon Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It also specifies “trafficking in false and misleading descriptions of the services offered under the Ministry’s trademarked name in violation of the Lanham Act, as well as defamation under common law arising from publication and distribution of information that libels the Ministry’s reputation, subjecting it to disgrace, ridicule, odium, and contempt in the estimation of the public.
D. James Kennedy Ministries has been falsely branded a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center for nothing more than subscribing to the teachings of the historic Christian faith. In this legal action we seek a trial by a jury of our peers, to preserve our own rights under the law and to defend the religious free speech rights of all Americans.”
We filed this suit to right a terrible wrong—but not only in defense of our own rights. We filed suit on behalf of every rabbi who labors long into the night on behalf of the welfare of his congregation, on behalf of every pastor who strives faithfully to shepherd the flock entrusted to his care, and on behalf of every nun and priest who work diligently to serve the less fortunate in our midst. We filed suit on behalf of religious freedom for all Americans.
This lawsuit is going to put a financial burden on the ministry but it is necessary to stop the discrimination of Christian organizations by organizations such as the SPLC and organizations that use the SPLC as a guide to identify hate groups.
So here is the question: Will you stand with us?
